Twitter users reveal the truth behind viral green dog

A picture of a vibrant green dog has gone viral on Twitter after an incident with a "freshly mowed lawn."

User @stonecold2050 posted the picture alongside the caption "Wet white dog. Freshly mowed lawn. What could possibly go wrong?"

The viral post attracted over 4,000 comments and 22,000 likes, but it also saw users get their detective hats out and label the image fake.

"Unless you have a painted spray on lawn, I don't for a minute believe cut grass could do this. :)", commented one user.

Another called out "someone recoloured it. This is the original."

It points back to a post one year ago on r/whatcouldgowrong where a user posted a noticeably less fluorescent version of the dog with a similar caption, "What if I decide to let my dog out after I mow my lawn?"

The original received over 74,000 up votes and 900 comments.

But the resurfaced photo still left a mark, starting up a trend with users posting photos of their dogs after they emerged from various situations looking less than themselves.

"My sister's dog Bruce. Ran straight into a duck pond," wrote one user named Craig.

"Dry white dog. Pink feather boa," wrote Emma.

Other users drew similarities between the fluoro green dog and a familiar face from Sesame Street. Yes, we're talking about none other than Oscar the Grouch.

Either way, we've learnt not to let dogs roam wild straight after the lawn is mowed.
