US woman receives electricity bills addressed to telegraph pole

An elderly woman in the US has expressed her frustration after being sent electricity bills and termination notices addressed to the telegraph pole out the front of her house.

The bills – which add up to US$2000 [AUD$2827] a month – have been sent 83-year-old Maria Sprizzo since early 2018.

“I’m reading this thing, and it says that I owe them $2,000,” the Staten Island resident told silive.com.

"I called [the electricity company] to no avail. Then I read it carefully and I noticed that the letter was addressed to the pole.

“A wooden pole in front of my house.”

The letters are all addressed to Charter communications – the owner of the of the pole – who are currently in arrears, according to Allan Drury, a spokesperson for the electricity company.

Drury told silive.com that in line with company policy, the bills and other letters are sent to that address as well a post box in Missouri.

Except Ms Sprizzo doesn’t see the logic: “You don’t write to a pole, if you’re normal.”

Drury confirmed that Ms Sprizzo was never at risk of having her service shut off, and is not expected to pay the bills. However, she just wants the letters to stop clogging up her mailbox.

“That mail comes into my box every month,” Sprizzo said.

“I’m 83 years old. Why are they putting me through this?

“I’m a nice woman.”
