Slain US jogger to be buried in her wedding dress

Wendy Martinez, 35, the US jogger who was fatally stabbed to death last Tuesday, will be laid to rest in her wedding dress.

Martinez got engaged to her partner, Daniel Hincapie, seven days before the attack occurred, and had recently purchased the gown in anticipation for her wedding day.

Her mother, Cora Martinez, said in a press conference on Thursday that those days after her engagement were the "happiest of her life".

"As a mother, I never figured it out that when I saw my daughter in that dress — that she was buying her dress for her burial," she said.

Wendy Martinez was on an evening jog three blocks from her apartment when she was attacked. After suffering multiple stab wounds to her neck, face and back, she stumbled into a nearby restaurant to ask for help. She passed away shortly after.

Police believe the attack was "unprovoked" and "random". They have arrested and charged a man named Anthony Crawford in relation to the crime.

Cora said she was proud of her daughter for fighting for her life to the end.

"My daughter was a fighter. My daughter was the most beautiful, special, vibrant young girl… very focused on her career, but above all she was a warrior," she said in the press conference.

"That makes us so proud for us to know our girl had the energy, the strength, and the audacity to fight."

Daniel Hincapie also spoke about his fiancee's death. "It’s one of those things that you just don’t expect. You’re suddenly the happiest man in the world. You’re engaged with the love of your life and suddenly — she’s gone."

The couple had planned to have two weddings: one in America, and another in Colombia.
