'I unfriended a school friend on Facebook and she hasn’t spoken to me since'

9Honey | As told to Victoria Bright

Joanne and Melissa had been friends since high school, although they lived in different states and rarely saw each other. However, they were Facebook friends, but Joanne felt Melissa was hardly on social media, defriended her and thought she wouldn’t notice...

I’d always had a pretty good friendship with Melissa. She was a really great girl and although I only saw her once every two years when I went back to my hometown in South Australia, I still considered her a friend.

She’d been single for a long time and I heard she’d recently fallen pregnant, gotten engaged and then married in very quick succession. We were Facebook friends, although she seemed to never be on there. She hadn’t posted anything in over a year and never commented or liked anything I posted.

Anyway, I sent her a Facebook message to congratulate her and never heard back.

One of the friends I defriended was Melissa. It was only because she seemed to never be on social media at all, never posting or anything. So that’s when I heard from her. She sent me a nasty email almost immediately.

It read, "I was very upset to see that you have dumped me from Facebook. I spend a lot of time on there because it gets lonely living on a farm and I always enjoyed reading your witty posts. I don’t know what I’ve done to offend you but hope you realise how mean you are."
