Love Stories: Treat Williams found his 'girl for life' with wife of over 30 years Pam Van Sant

When celebrated actor Treat Williams was killed in a shock motorcycle accident in June 2023 he left behind his "girl for life", wife Pam Van Sant.

The couple had been married for over three decades, raising two children and celebrating countless milestones together along the way.

Their love story began in the '90s when Williams first met Van Sant, who was working as a waitress in New York city.

He was already a star, having risen to fame with roles in major productions like Hair and Steven Spielberg's 1941, but he quickly fell for Van Sant.

The pair began dating and welcomed their first child in 1992, a son they named Gill, followed by a daughter named Elinor 'Ellie' in 1998, the same year they got married.

Reflecting on their marriage decades later, Williams said he was "blessed" to have Van Sant by his side and called her his "girl for life" on Instagram before he died.

Though he was a big-name actor in the '80s, Williams' career slowed down in the '90s as he recovered from drug addiction and focused on his relationship and family with Van Sant.

He didn't make a single film for six years before the release of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead in 1995, which marked his return to Hollywood.

"I got married. I had a child. We found a house in Vermont. We've been travelling and living. I've been working [but] I wouldn't say the offers are rolling in," he said that year.

"I think in a way your life goes where it needs to go, and maybe I needed to be out of it and to go through what I went through to grow up so I could be the actor that I'm really meant to be – the clear-headed guy that I want to be in my work and not somebody who's living life in the fast lane."

In the same interview he confessed to battling a cocaine addiction for about six years, revealing he often used the drug three times a week and it took a toll on his career.

Williams wanted to party more than he wanted to focus on his work when his star was still rising and by the time he realised that was a bad move, it was too late.

"It was over, you know, the heat was off. You don't realise, unfortunately, until later on how fleeting fame and power in Hollywood are," he said.

He also revealed that despite some critics calling him the 'next Al Pacino' before his break from acting, he wasn't making the big bucks as some people assumed.

"I sure wish that I had been in a film that made $100 million and made me a millionaire or that I'd had any financial success at all in a movie," he said.

It was a shock when the actor owned up to the addiction struggles that plagued him through the '80s but he told reporters that he decided spoke out for the sake of his family.

"I'm being honest for my son, and for anyone who wants to know about it - that stuff is dangerous and it will slow your career down," he said.

Fortunately, Williams was able to break back into Hollywood with a series of successful films through the late '90s and early 2000s.

Van Sant eventually joined her husband in the entertainment industry, acting and producing for the '90s docuseries American Masters.

In the late '00s Williams added a number of TV roles to his resume while Van Sant focused on raising their children.

Though she and Williams took the kids to a number of red carpet and industry events in the '90s and '00s, the family gradually disappeared from the spotlight.

For decades, the couple enjoyed a quiet, private family life in Vermont where Williams and Van Sant bought a home together early in their marriage.

"I bought the house that we're in 35 years ago," he told Vermont magazine in 2021 of the home they raised their children in. 

"There was something incredibly special about it to me... I have everything I want and need in Vermont. I've been all over the world, and I've never seen a place as beautiful."

It was near that home he loved so much that Williams was killed in a fatal motorcycle crash on June 12, 2023, after colliding with a car on Vermont Route 30.

Vermont State Police later confirmed that the car had turned into the path of Williams' motorcycle and he was unable to avoid colliding with it.

The actor was airlifted to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead aged 71.

News of his death sparked an outpouring of love and condolences from friends, family and famous co-stars, though wife Van Sant did not release a statement at the time.

When she finally broke her silence, it was to remember the love of her life by marking their 35th wedding anniversary just weeks after his death.

"Happy anniversary honey! 35 years," she wrote over a photo of them on their wedding day. 

"1st anniversary on location in Bali," Van Sant she added to a 1999 snap of the couple in Indonesia, among other family throwbacks.

Following Williams' sudden death, Van Sant took over his Instagram account and continues to post tributes to their life together to this day.
