Tracy Grimshaw: 'My evening with Australia's new First Lady, Jenny Morrison'

‘Straya: we don’t always get it right, and goodness knows our politicians need a collective uppercut for their recent shenanigans.

But we are a land of opportunity and egalitarianism… where our last Prime Minister chose not to move into Kirribilli House because it wasn’t as nice as his own joint on the other side of the Harbour. (I didn’t blame him, for the record. There’s no place like home.)
 
Our latest Prime Minister lives in a modest family cottage in the Sutherland Shire with no front fence, married to his childhood sweetheart who probably secretly wishes he wasn’t about to choof off for the week to try and win back a few votes in the crucial electoral battleground of Queensland… because there are some chairs at home that need fixing.

I arrived at their house - our camera crew had completely dismantled the cosy living room to cram our gear in for the interviews - and when Jenny walked into the room and I extended my hand to say hello, she said, “Oh, we don’t need to shake hands. I can give you a hug, can’t I? I used to watch you for years on the Today Show.”
 
Her best girlfriend from school was there, and we all shuffled past the rearranged furniture into the compact kitchen to chat about kids and dogs and cooking and Prime Ministers.

I’ve interviewed Bob Hawke and met Blanche in their spectacular home on the North Shore of Sydney, and years before I interviewed Tamie Fraser, wife of PM Malcolm, in the living room of their impressive rural estate 'Nareen' in Victoria’s Western District.

Neither of them gave me a hug hello on introduction, or showed me their cookbook collection in the hallway, or asked if I wanted them with their favourite cardi on or off for the interview (I said whatever she was comfortable in).

And they certainly didn’t invite me back for a curry, or confide they wished Bob or Malcolm had been a plumber because the repairs would get done and they’d come home every night.

Scott Morrison might pull off a miracle and win the next election, and Jenny from the Shire will settle in to the new routine with their two daughters, one cat and one dog.
