The 'meaningless' story behind one TikTok star's famous face tattoo

Face tattoos appear to be having a moment on TikTok, with one social media star sharing the backstory to their ink - and prompted other users to do the same.

TikTok user Elleot Basso, 22, shared a video that contrasted the common belief tattoos always have some sort of meaning.

"Growing up I was always told that tattoos should have meanings, so stitch this and show me your most meaningless tattoo," Basso said.

The jewellery designer then revealed his own tattoos, including a small, black line across the bridge of his nose.

Basso confirmed a number of his tattoos "don't have meanings", particularly his face ink.

"I get asked what it means, it doesn't have one," he explained.

"I used to draw it there with eyeliner and I liked it, so here it is."

Another TikTok user, Jenna Bothun, took Basso's lead, revealing the jellyfish arm on their tattoo lacked deeper meaning - but still had its own story.

Bothun recalled being "livid" after going unnoticed for her appointment at a tattoo parlour, having waited there for two and a half hours and put down a $50 deposit upfront.

Understandably frustrated, Bothun said the design was "the most spontaneous tattoo I ever got."

"I get the most comments on it, people love it," she shared.

TikTok user Madison Veldman, 19, showed off a slightly more obscure design, flaunting a "pickle" tattoo on her toe.

Veldman offered no context to her decision, simply calling it "legendary."

Another user named Felix said their first tattoo, and most meaningless design, was one they did themselves.

"But it means everything to me," they said.

At face value, the design is two dots on Felix's hand - one placed on either side of their index finger knuckle.

"It's just like two dots, whatever," Felix explained, before moulding their hand into a speaking mouth, with the dots representing eyes.

"Her, how's it going?" they said, mimicking the voice of their tattooed hand.

Users praised Basso's trend, with one person writing, "People forget that 'because I like it' is a meaning."

"It's just a decoration is what I always say," said another user.

Another person added, "I personally think meaning to decorate my fleshy temple works just fine."
