First look at The Crown season two: Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage troubles

Theirs is seemingly one of the most united partnerships to ever exist, but Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage hasn’t always been smooth sailing, as The Crown’s newly-released season two trailer proves. 

The much-anticipated second series of the show covers the years 1956-1964, and won’t arrive until December. However, Netflix bosses have teased viewers with a trailer that delves deep into the marriage of the Queen and her consort, following their wedding and birth of their children in the first hit season. 

During the trailer, one of the Queen’s advisors gives her a warning about her free-spirited husband: “You married a wild spirit. Trying to tame him is no use.” 

It also features a tense conversation between the pair: “The whole relentlessness of it all,” Philip says to Elizabeth. “The fact it never stops not for a minute. But is it not possible that among all those problems there are some of us who are there for you no matter what.”

Elizabeth snaps back, “If only.”



The storyline also focuses on the Queen’s soldiers fighting an illegal war in Egypt and the undoing of Elizabeth’s third prime minister, Harold MacMillan, who resigns after a scandal. 

“I’ve learnt more about humiliation in the past few weeks than I hoped I would in a lifetime,” Claire Foy, who plays the role of the monarch, says in the clip.

Princess Margaret will make a return, this time embarking on a new romance with a photographer, and there’ll also be a sneak peek of JFK and Jackie. O in the series.

Creator of the show Peter Morgan says we should also expect to see more of Matt Smith in the role of Prince Philip, telling Elle: “The soul of Season 2 is about his complexity.”

The Crown season one is one of Netflix’s most successful series’ of all time, bagging 10 Emmy nominations. It also won two Golden Globe awards, both for Best Television Series-Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for Foy.

At $165 million, it's also the most expensive series ever made - but the success has more than made up for the immense cost.

The Crown season two will be available on Netflix from December 8.
