Tenant claims his landlord installed a coin operated toilet

Imagine paying a dollar every time you need to go to the bathroom…that’s exactly what one Reddit user is claiming happened after his landlord barred him from flushing his toilet unless he pays.

In a thread on the sharing site, a Melbourne tenant claimed a dollar coin-operated flush was installed on his toilet by the landlord. He went on to ask other users whether this act was illegal, writing:

"I’m in Melbourne, Thornbury. I understand in our laundry having to pay for the communal washing machine.

"But I pay the water bill that goes into my apartment. He said it was a government incentive to save water. But then why does he get to collect the money? I see nothing on google about this so I can't work out if I'm being duped?"

The post was initially removed because reddit moderators on the Melbourne subreddit didn’t believe the story was true. However, the user then posted a link to a picture, and the post was republished.

While it has not been confirmed yet whether the story is real, fellow reddit users have rushed to reply to the original post. 

One wrote: "Not sure if parody of Melbourne property market, or literally the worst landlord known to mankind.

"But if it's the 2nd option, yeaaaah I'm pretty sure that's illegal as hell."

Another added: "This guy is ripping you off in a most heinous way."
