Teen couple hit back after trolls 'fat shame' prom photos

This teen couple just showed the world exactly how to handle the haters.

High school seniors Tre Brooker and Madison Haulter, from Indianapolis, have never been shy of flaunting their love online. So, naturally, when it came to their high school prom recently, a number of cute couple snaps were posted online.

The photos showed the couple posing, Madison dressed in a low-back pink-sequin dress and Tre dressed in a suit with a matching pink bow tie.

But the couple told Honey they had been "shocked" when they arrived home from the prom and read some of the cruel comments that had been posted online, including some people asking if Tre had "lost a bet" and another person, who wrote: "Wow he loves you even though you're fat, must be nice :)".Madison and Tre's prom photos. Madison then took a screenshot of the comment and posted it on Twitter, adding: "Don't see how people can be rude to people they don't even know." The couple have since then been inundated with words of support from others online.

Tre told Honey the negative comments had been "shocking to see", adding: "I feel like a lot of time, society doesn't understand the value of cyber bullying. One negative comment you say to someone could stick with them for a life time."

He said the couple had been overwhelmed by the response and couldn't believe it had reached as far as Australia.

"We our so surprised by the positive feedback our story has received and so grateful for the interest people have shown in putting our message out there," he said.

"It's crazy how our story has went around the world, an I'm glad it touched so many people.

"All the support they gave her was unbelievable and I loved every second of it."

Tre said the couple had been together for a year now, adding "I fall in love with her more and more every day" and that he thought she looked "gorgeous" on her prom night.

"Madison looked absolutely amazing at prom. I felt like I didn't deserve to take some one this beautiful to prom," he said.

The couple, who met on Valentine's Day in their junior year at Pike High School, now wanted to send a message to "be kind to others and, as cliche as it sounds, treat others how you want to be treated", he said.

"We want everyone to know their worth, and be proud of their beauty and love the skin they're in."

Since then, she received thousands of comments and re-tweets from people offering words of support.

"Don't entertain her, you looked absolutely gorgeous tonight!" wrote one person.

Tre himself also responded to the comments on Twitter. He wrote: "You're not fat baby. God made you just for me. You're perfect."

Several people have praised the teen's open support for his girlfriend, with one posting: "Way to go to stick up for your girl bro. A lot of dudes are scared to do that."

"Just saw your story brother, way to stick up for your lady! No one needs pointless negativity in their lives. Wish you both the best!"

Madison told Fox59 it never crossed her mind what other people would think of the outfit or if she would "stand out".

She said that she had been overwhelmed by the reaction, adding she just wanted people to think twice before saying horrible things or bullying online.

"I just want people to realise the power behind their words. You can’t sit behind a computer screen and say anything you want because your words can have a big affect on other people."

Madison's father Tom said his daughter's boyfriend was "a young man full of integrity with a genuinely good heart and treats her like a queen".

"They both have good heads on their shoulders, and it’s fun watching them grow together. That’s all her mother and I could ask for concerning our daughter’s relationship."
