Should sledging be banned in sport?

Should we ban sledging in sport?  It certainly caused a hell of a lot of grief for our cricketers recently. 

And it got me thinking, why is it okay?

Let’s put it in a different scenario…

You and a business rival sit down for a pitch meeting to win business from a new company. Before discussions begin, your counterpart leans over and says, “Do you really know what you’re doing?” Then brags about having sex with your Mum last night and finally threatens to “rip your head off”.

At the end of the meeting, you win the new business so everyone shakes hands and congratulates you on the job you did.

On what planet is that normal? Why is a cricket oval or footy field not considered part of polite society?

If sledging is not allowed in real life, why is it allowed in sport?

Sports commentators and players claim sledging is just psyching out another player and therefore part of the game.

How about winning because of your physical prowess, not your foul tongue?

I think we need a re-think when it comes to sledging.
