'People feel sorry for me because I'm single, but here's what I wish they knew'
When my boyfriend left me two years ago, I was upset at first. We'd been together for about six years and I thought I'd marry him, but it wasn't meant to be and I wish him well.
I don't have any bad feelings about him and, every now and then, I hear from him. He still checks up on me, so I suppose you could say we are friends still, although not close anymore.

He met a new woman very quickly – I often wonder if she was the reason he broke up with me – and he seems very happy as I've seen them on social media. I don't hold anything against him, but people feel sorry for me because I'm still single, and I'm often telling my friends to stop worrying about me because I am fine.

I'm actually happier being single than I was in my relationship with my ex-boyfriend.
I feel like I have a lot of freedom. My ex didn't like me going out much without him and now I'm out all the time. Plus, I have my dog for company; with him I never feel lonely!

I like being able to get up on a Saturday morning and go to my local markets, which is something my ex never wanted to do with me. I love being able to buy all the food I like, mostly fresh fruit and veggies as well as chocolate.
My ex didn't have a very healthy lifestyle, rarely ate fruit and veggies and didn't have a sweet tooth. He was all about junk food, fried food and things that I just didn't touch unless there was nothing else in the house.

I can also indulge in some of my favourite hobbies, such as cycling. My ex didn't like any form of exercise, unless you can include sex as an exercise, so I also feel like I'm healthier than I've been in years simply by following my heart and doing what I know my body needs.

I've seriously only ever had one time when I felt sad about being lonely, and that was at a friend's wedding. I think it's normal for single people to feel a little left out at a wedding, which is why most have a token "single person's table".

I was seated next to a single man that I quite liked, but he showed absolutely no interest in me, he didn't even ask me my name until I told him. So I left the wedding thinking maybe I would never meet another man again in my life. I reassured myself that that is okay, too.
I'm very happy being single and just being me. I'm lucky I have some very close girlfriends who look after me and check in when they feel they need to. So I just wish people would stop feeling sorry for me.
