Questions over Serena Williams’ mum’s reaction to her win

Serena Williams took home a thrilling victory after her match against Simone Halep yesterday, causing just about everyone in the stadium to erupt into cheers.

Everyone, that is, except her own mother.

While Serena battled it out on the court, mum Oracene Price watched on from her daughter’s supporting box alongside Venus Williams, Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou and fashion icon Anna Wintour.

Price herself once coached Serena and sister Venus, so she knows the game and her daughter’s playing well, likely analysing every step Serena took on the court in the nail-biting match.

But when Serena came out on top with an exhilarating 6-1 4-6 6-4 win Price’s reaction left something to be desired.

The rest of Serena’s supporting box – the rest of the stadium in fact – leapt to their feet to celebrate Serena’s win over the current world number one, Price remained totally impassive.

“Serena’s Mum: care factor zero #AusOpen,” tweeted one fan, along with a clip of the moment.

Of course, having raised not one but two world champion tennis players means that Price has seem more match wins than you can shake a stick at, but many questioned whether  Serena’s victory deserved a little more excitement.

Twitter went wild coming up with different answers to the question of Price’s non-reaction, leading to some pretty quality comedy.

“She’s like… ‘why y’all surprised?’” one user commented.

Another joked that Price’s thoughts were more along the lines of; “This ain’t even the final, I don’t have to get up for this!”

But others simply insisted that for Price it’s nothing new to watch her daughters dominate on the tennis court.

“Serena’s mum has been watching tennis all her life. She’s tired. Let her be.”

Still, this was no ordinary win for Serena, who has now become the oldest player to defeat the world number one at a grand slam – though at 37 Serena is hardly what we’d call old.

But given how strong her relationship is with her mother we’re sure Serena won’t take issue with her mum’s lack of reaction.

“My mom instilled in [Venus and I] to be confident women, to really believe in ourselves,” she told Allure in a recent interview.

She added that she too was now teaching the same lessons to daughter Olympia, 1, and took many of her mum’s own skills into motherhood.

“I’m definitely teaching it to my daughter.”

Clearly Serena and her mum have a beautiful bond, regardless of how chill Price may be about Serena’s win.
