'She abandoned her children': scathing obituary for mother goes viral

The family of a US woman have marked her death with a scathing obituary in her local newspaper.

Kathleen Dehmlow was 80 when she passed away on May 31 in Springfield, Minnesota.

In the obituary published in the Redwood Falls Gazette, Dehmlow’s family - namely her children Gina and Jay - pull no punches.

The five-paragraph article begins in standard fashion, detailing Dehmlow’s parents, date of birth, and marriage to Gina and Jay’s father in 1957.

From there, the tone of the obituary becomes considerably more pointed.

“She will not be missed by Gina and Jay, and they understand that this world is a better place without her.”

The obituary has made headlines after a photo of it was shared and widely circulated on Twitter on Tuesday. It has since been removed from the Gazette's website.

Although Gina and Jay are yet to comment publicly on the obituary, a relative of Dehmlow’s tells the Star Tribune while the events cited are true, there’s “a lot of stuff” missing.

“The sad thing about this is there is no rebuttal. There is more to it than this. It’s not simple,” Dwight Dehmlow is quoted as saying.

“She made a mistake 60 years ago, but who hasn’t? Has she regretted it over the years? Yes.”

It’s claimed Dehmlow had been living in a nursing home for a year and was with her sisters when she passed away.
