Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall reveal the name of their new daughter

When Zara Phillips welcomed her second child a week ago, a palace statement said the baby's name would be revealed "in due course".

Ten days later, Phillips, 37, and husband Mike Tindall, 39, have revealed that their second daughter has been named Lena Elizabeth.

The sweet name, pronounced Lay-na, is a tribute to the Queen herself, but the newest royal addition won't be given a royal title.

The wait for the reveal isn't unexpected; Zara and Mike took six days to share the name of their first daughter, Mia, following her birth in 2014.

"As soon as we had Mia I sent a text to all the family," Mike, a former England rugby captain, told Hello! at the time.

"Zara is very close to her grandmother, so of course she made a phone call once we got back home."

How very modern.

Similarly, it took the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge four days to share Prince Louis' name after his birth in April.

Royal sources have previously stressed to the Daily Mail that there is no "protocol" stating the Queen has to approve all royal baby names, nor an expectation on her part that she should be informed in person before they're announced.

According to royal commentator Victoria Arbiter, royals have a "great responsibility" when it comes to naming new family members, so it's understandable that they wait a little while before making them official.

"I expect they want to be a hundred percent certain of their choice before announcing the name and sealing the baby's place in history," she told Town and Country earlier this year.

Queen Elizabeth II didn't reveal Prince Charles' name for an entire month after his birth in 1948, while it took Prince Charles and Princess Diana a week to share Prince William's name.

Baby Lena is the monarch's seventh great-grandchild.

The happy announcement comes more than a year after the Tindalls faced heartbreak when Zara suffered a miscarriage just before Christmas in 2016.
