The Queen's win on Christmas Day

The world has had all year to binge-watch TV, but there was something more people tuned into than anything else on Christmas Day: the Queen's Christmas Broadcast.

Views hit 8.14 million across BBC One, ITV and Sky News as people tuned in to watch the 94-year-old monarch address the nation –– a speech which has been televised since 1957.

Queen Elizabeth II spoke of hope amid the ongoing pandemic, giving special thanks to health workers and community volunteers.

"Remarkably, a year that has necessarily kept people apart has, in many ways, brought us closer," she said.

"In the United Kingdom and around the world, people have risen magnificently to the challenges of the year, and I am so proud and moved by this quiet, indomitable spirit," she continued. "To our young people in particular I say thank you for the part you have played."

Call The Midwife had the second highest number of viewers, with 5.43 million tuning into BBC One, and 5.26 million watching comedy game show Blankety Blank.

In 2019, 7.85 million people tuned in to watch the Queen's Christmas Broadcast, beaten by comedy Gavin and Stacey that drew a huge 11.6 million people.

The Queen made a romantic gesture to her husband Prince Philip during her Christmas Day speech, with a photo of the Duke of Edinburgh from her private collection sitting next to the monarch on the table during her address to the nation.

Christmas celebrations looked different for the Queen this year, herself and Prince Philip are spending it alone in Windsor Castle, due to coronavirus restrictions in the UK.
