The Queen to formally invite Trump to London on state visit

It looks like US President Donald Trump will be crossing the pond for his first official state visit to the UK in June, but it won't be his first time meeting the Queen.

The Sunday Times reported that the two leaders are set to come together next month, most likely centring Trump's state visit around the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6th.

They've met before, Trump visiting London in July 2018, however that trip was considered a working visit rather than an official state visit and therefore lacked some of the more extravagant events we can expect from his visit this year.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but other official state visits have included everything from banquets at Buckingham Palace to carriage processions through London.

By now the Queen is an expert at welcoming American Presidents to the UK, having invited every US president except Lyndon B. Johnson to Britain at least once during their term since she assumed the throne.

Though there have been no formal announcements, it's likely that Buckingham Palace and the White House will officially announce Trump's state visit within the week.

While the president is known to freely share his less-savoury opinions of other world leaders, it seems that Queen Elizabeth has escaped his ire.

Speaking about Her Majesty in 2018, the president called her "an incredible woman" and said that he felt she "represents her country so well."

"If you think of it, for so many years she has represented her country, she has really never made a mistake," Trump said before he first met her in July of last year.

"You don’t see, like, anything embarrassing."

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the President of the United States.

Her Majesty met Trump for the first time in July last year, when he travelled to London for a working visit that included a trip to Windsor Castle, which included tea with the Queen and a military parade.

However that visit didn't go down too well with the British public, as protesters demonstrated their disapproval of the American leader throughout London.

One of the most memorable protests included a huge 'Trump Baby' blimp that depicted the president as a six-metre-tall nappy-wearing baby floating above British Parliament Square during his visit.

The blimp had been approved by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and has since gone on tour, travelling to different European cities and even greeting the real Trump in Buenos Aires for the G20 summit last year.
