The Prince and Princess of Wales reportedly intervened to ensure their eldest children were given the chance to bid a final farewell to Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte will join their parents William and Kate and other senior members of the British royal family at Her Majesty's State Funeral on Monday.

George, nine, and Charlotte, seven, will be the youngest royals and only great-grandchildren to walk behind the Queen's coffin into Westminster Abbey.

The young royals were reportedly a late inclusion into the funeral order, according to The Sun, and it was Kate and William's idea to include them.

The Prince and Princess of Wales believed it important their eldest children attend the historic occasion.

It is the first time the royal siblings will been seen in public since the death of their beloved "gran-gran" on September 8.

Their inclusion in the historic event will no doubt draw comparisons to the sombre walk their father and uncle undertook at Princess Diana's funeral in September 1997.

Last week Prince William revealed walking behind his grandmother's coffin reminded him of his mother's funeral 25 years ago.

When one woman told the prince she was close to tears, he said, "Don't cry now, you'll start me."

George is second in line to the British throne behind father William.

It is not the first time the royal siblings have been involved in a high-profile farewell.

In March this year, the royal siblings walked hand-in-hand with their parents at the thanksgiving service for their late great-grandfather Prince Philip.

Her Majesty will be laid to rest at a State Funeral in London about 7.30pm (AEST).
