Queen Elizabeth issues a statement on Australia's drought crisis

The Queen has reached out to the Australian farmers devastated by the ongoing drought.

Her Majesty issued a statement today, released by Government House, in a show of support for those affected by the crisis.

In the statement, the Queen said she and Prince Philip are deeply saddened by the effects of the drought but are encouraged to see Australians rallying together.

She went on to say it was clear "one of the worst Australian droughts in living memory" was taking a heavy toll on our nation.

"I know Australia as a land where extremes of weather, floods and droughts are taken in their stride, and life goes on with a stoic and determined spirit," the Queen said in the statement.

"It is clear, however, that the current drought is taking an immense toll, especially on those living and working in rural communities, who are, in so many ways, the very heart and soul of Australia."

The statement also noted the Queen has also made a private donation to support the drought relief efforts, however the exact number has not been released.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the many individuals, families, communities and businesses who have been affected," she said.

"And I send my sincere thanks to all those who stand shoulder-to-shoulder in their support."

The Queen isn't the only high profile figure to speak out about the drought.

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman kicked off the donations on Monday morning, pledging $100,000 to those doing it tough.

In a video message shared on TODAYTODAY, the couple pleaded with others to donate what they can.

Nine's Farm Aid Telethon has so far raised more than $7.6 million for our Aussie farmers.

The Telethon took place on Monday, beginning with a special edition of TODAY which saw hosts Karl Stefanovic and Georgie Gardner telecast from the Dubbo Showground.

It's been seven years since Aussie farmers – largely in New South Wales and Queensland - saw decent rain.

Even when the rain does come, it will take years for rural and regional families to recover from the effects of the drought.
