Why Queen Camilla hasn't made it into her family's WhatsApp chat

All the pomp and pageantry aside, the British royal family really are just another family.

Like many families, the royals have their own family WhatsApp chat, but it turns out Queen Camilla didn't make the cut. But why?

According to her son Tom Parker Bowles, the reason is not due to any bad blood but simply because the queen is still hanging onto her "old fashioned" Nokia, which is too old to support the messaging app.

In an interview with Woman & Home, Bowles, 49, confirmed his family, like most families, has a WhatsApp chat.

"We do – my children, my sister and cousins," Bowles said, per People.

"But my mum still uses an old fashioned Nokia telephone, so [she] can't. I think it's for security."

Old school Nokia phones, often labelled "bricks", don't have the software of modern smartphones to support apps like WhatsApp and have very limited capability.

But it seems the Queen has an affinity for her old-school phone.

The Nokia's not much help for Camilla's son, however, with Bowles revealing he couldn't get a hold of his mum during her and King Charles III's 11-day Pacific royal tour.

Instead Bowles keeps up with his mum's whereabouts like the rest of us, by tuning into the news.

"She's working a lot harder," Tom said, per People.

"She's always worked quite hard, [so] it's still the case of, I ring my mother, she doesn't answer. I look on the television [and think], 'Ah! She's in Jersey.' "

According to the Telegraph UK, little is known about the mobile phones used by the royal family for security reasons. The late Queen Elizabeth II was rumoured to own a Blackberry while it is believed that Charles does not own a phone and instead has his staff field his calls.

Phone security is a matter of high importance for the royals, as several family members have been affected by instances of phone hacking. The royal phone hacking scandal has made headlines for years.

This year, Prince Harry took part in an ITV documentary on phone hacking and according to ITV revealed his mission to continue his "fight to expose the illegal tactics of Britain's tabloid press".
