Tender moment between Princess Mary and Prince Frederik captured in ballroom video shared by palace

After a quick bow Mary, the Crown Princess of Denmark, skips around her dance partner before reaching out a hand for her husband to take.

The tender moment between the Australian-born princess and husband Frederik, the Crown Prince of Denmark, was captured at an official engagement on September 24 and later shared by the royal family on Instagram.

In video from the evening, royal followers were given a rare glimpse into Mary's royal life.

The princess can be seen taking part in the square dance, Les Lanciers, while wearing a floor-length fuchsia gown.

Eagle-eyed royal watchers would have spotted Mary in the same dress from Danish designer David Anderson back in 2017.

The royal couple, who celebrated 18 years of marriage in May, this year hosted more than 350 guests at the event at Christiansborg Castle.

The first time the traditional event took place at the castle was in 1958.

The video snippet was the first time Princess Mary has been seen by members of the public since the "regrettable error" that saw her absent at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

Many foreign royals were invited to farewell Her Majesty at her State Funeral in London last week due to their close ties to the late monarch, including those from Denmark.

Denmark's Queen Margrethe II is a third cousin to Elizabeth II, being a great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

She was seated in the front row of Westminster Abbey with son Prince Frederik. Guests, no matter who they are, were permitted to bring a plus one.

As Denmark's future King, Frederik was the natural choice to accompany his mother.

Britain's Foreign Office admitted that a "regrettable error" had been made.

"The FCDO has passed on their profound apologies to the Danish Royal Household through the Danish Embassy," a spokesperson said.

With the death of Elizabeth II, Queen Margrethe of Denmark is now Europe's longest-reigning monarch.
