Spanish and Dutch Princesses prepare to leave kingdoms to study abroad

Princess Leonor of Spain and Princess Alexia of the Netherlands are embracing the post-Brexit world and leaving their respective kingdoms to study in the UK.

Heir to the throne Leonor, 15, the daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, will study for two years at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales, undergoing the International Baccalaureate program — while King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima's second daughter Alexia joins her.

The pair will attend the college not too far from the world they call home, with UWC reportedly set in the 12th century St Donat's Castle on the southern Welsh coast.

Equipped with libraries, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and sprawling woodlands, the college, founded in 1962, was also famously attended by Prince Charles.

The teen royals follow a long line of the monarchy's alumni to have attended the campus, including, King Willem-Alexander himself, Princess Raiyah bint Al-Hussein of Jordan and the schools most recent graduate, Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, who finished in May 2020.

According to the school's website, lessons occur from 8am to 1:10pm, with a rigorous extra curricular program, mandating students undertake a minimum of two hours of community service, two hours of physical activity and two hours of creative activity each week, during the afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Students are also expected to join the college's clubs and initiative - including an ACapella choir, or dance group.

As per Express, the pair will reside at one of the eight boarding houses on campus during their studies.

The Dutch royal family made the announcement earlier in the year, confirming the teen royal would begin her new venture in the British summer.

"After the summer, Princess Alexia will continue her high school years at the @UWCAtlantic in Llantwit Major in Wales. She goes there for her International Baccalaureate," they wrote on Instagram.

The two-year course at UWC will cost £67,000 ($120,000).

Her father attended the same school between 1983 and 1985.

The school, for students aged 16-19 years, says it seeks to "inspire change-makers" who want to work for the common good. It looks for students who "can navigate the complexity of life and (reach) beyond easy answers," according to its website.

It takes in students from around 150 countries.

The Duch royal family's statement emerged weeks after the Spanish royal family announced Princess Leonor will also attend the school this year.

The Spanish Princess reportedly obtained admission to the school anonymously, taking several tests before being accepted, the royal household said.

It noted the school's "open and critical approach" to education.
