Diana was only allowed to invite 100 guests to her 2,000 person wedding

She was about to marry into one of the most powerful families in the world and become a royal herself, but Princess Diana didn't get much of a say on her wedding day.

In fact, new details have revealed that the late princess was only allowed to invite 100 people to her wedding, despite there being more than 2,000 guests in attendance.

Back in 1981, Diana's wedding to Prince Charles was the biggest and best royal wedding the world had ever seen, billed as the "fairytale" ceremony all little girls dream of.

But behind the scenes Diana was struggling with the realities of being the shining star of the "wedding of the century."

Mary Robertson had previously employed Diana as a nanny for her toddler son and was amazed when an invitation arrived on her doorstep to the royal wedding.

Though the pair had kept in touch, Mary never expected to be invited to the ceremony alongside politicians, royals and big name British personalities.

"We were actually in the same row as Margaret Thatcher," she recalled in Channel 5’s Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding.

But she was even more amazed when she found out just how few people Diana had been allowed to invite.

“We learned later Diana had only been allowed 100 invitations out of 2,000, but again bless her, she remembered us," Mary said.

Though it's easy to understand why the groom's side of that particular wedding may have been a little larger, Charles being heir apparent to the English throne and all, but the fact that Diana was allowed only a handful of invites has shocked royal fans.

Given that there were 2,000 people packed into St Paul's cathedral that day, it means only 5 per cent of the wedding guests were Diana's own friends and family.

"I think they [the royal family] expected her to just, stay in the background and stay quiet, and follow five steps behind Prince Charles," Mary explained.

It didn't help that just days before the wedding Diana had discovered a package addressed to Camilla Parker-Bowles, thought to be a parting gift from Charles, who had along history with the now-Duchess of Cornwall.

“[Diana] looked so tense and nervous, she must have had this incident in her mind," Mary added of the late princess on her wedding day.

Diana lost so much weight in the lead up to her wedding that her now iconic dress had to be taken in several times, the royal's waist shrinking 5 inches until it measured only 23 inches around.

Though Diana went on to share a few happy years with Charles, the stresses of her wedding day and its planning were later reflected in their marriage, and the pair divorced in 1996.
