Customer gets the surprise of her life as future King takes her pasty order

An English pasty shop customer has enjoyed a chat with the next in line to the British throne – and she didn't even know it.

Prince William was on a royal visit to the town of Cornwall, which is famous for its Cornish pasties, when he decided to lend a hand at a local pasty shop.

It was during the visit, in which he also had a go at making the warm pastries filled with meat and vegetables, that he decided to answer a phone call, and soon found himself taking an order – with hilarious results.

Videos shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales' Instagram account and another belonging to The Sun royal correspondent Matt Wilkinson captured the exchange.

"Hello, good afternoon," Prince William said as he answered the call to Gear Farm Pasty Company.

After listening to the caller, he asked the staff, "Do we have any frozen pasties?"

After being assured they did, he told the caller, "Yes, we have plenty".

He then told the caller the shop closed at 2pm, and asked, "Do you want me to take an order from you?"

"Ten frozen pasties please," he told a staff member, before telling the caller, "We've got plenty of cooked ones. Just made some fresh ones now. Ten frozen and five cooked ones.

"And what name is that? Juicy? Josie!" he said as the staff erupted into laughter.

"Sorry Josie, I thought you said Juicy, I apologise. We've got it. The pasties will be juicy, you're right.

"We've got 15 pasties for Josie at 1.45.

"Five freshly cooked ones and 10 frozen. Bye bye, Josie, bye bye."

By the time Josie arrived to collect her order, the Prince had left to go to his next stop.

But staff were sure to tell her it was the future King who took her order, with the Daily Mail reporting she was 'delighted'.

Media outlets later tracked town Josie, who admitted she was initially concerned she wouldn't get her order after he misheard her name.

"I was flabbergasted when I found out," she said.

"I had no idea who was answering my call, but the person on the line was a bit incoherent, and I was really worried I wasn't going to get my pasties."

William, who also holds his father's former title the Duke of Cornwall, was in the town to celebrate St Piran's Day, which honours the patron saint of Cornwall.

He also attended a community fire station, where he was seen chatting to children who had waited outside.

Also during the visit to Gear Farm Pasty Company, Prince William had a touching exchange with a Ukrainian farmer and refugee who grows the vegetables used in the pasties.

"We are thinking about you all, all of the time," he told the man, who was accompanied by his wife and young daughter.

"We hope and pray [the war in Ukraine] comes to an end soon."

During the visit, he also tried his hand at pasty-making, but struggled to fold the pastries.

"This is not my finest hour. This is where I need my wife. She would be all over this. It's really not easy," he said.

The lighthearted exchange was a welcome change for William, who recently admitted he was not in a "calm state" following the arrest of his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
