Harry and Meghan's popularity 'plummeting' as their magazine covers flop

Despite once being labelled the most "modern" royal couple, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's popularity is reportedly on the decline.

The news may not come as a huge surprise, given how much backlash the couple have faced since leaving the royal family – and even before that.

But according to one royal expert, even magazines don't want the royals on covers these days, as those issues just don't do as well.

Ingrid Seward, Majesty magazine's editor-in-chief, stopped putting the Sussexes on her publication's covers "a while ago" and wasn't surprised to see others do the same.

"It just wasn't selling, the magazine wasn't selling when they were on the cover," she told the Royally Obsessed podcast.

According to Seward, Hello! magazine have also stopped putting Harry and Meghan on their magazine covers, as have some British publications.

"Obviously there are some beautiful pictures of them," she added.

"I would like to have them on the cover, but it just doesn't seem to work. I find that weird and interesting."

Seward pointed out that polls have shown the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's popularity "plummeted completely" in the UK over the last several months.

Add that to ongoing tabloid criticism of the pair, as well as online vitriol and public backlash over several recent moves.

According to Seward, much of the resentment towards the pair stems from a feeling – in the UK at least – that Harry "deserted" the British people and his role as a royal.

He and Meghan stepped down from their royal duties in March, and though they have denied claims Meghan was behind the decision, much of the public still blame the duchess for "Megxit".

It doesn't help that the couple have since moved to the US and started a whole new, pseudo-celebrity life, including Netflix deals and political commentary amid the US election.

Seward said that many Brits now view Harry as "living off his name" and "taking advantage" of his royal statues without having to "put in the hard work".

It's a complex situation for the Sussexes, who left the monarchy in search of a new, more private life for their young family.

Yet in doing so, they seem to have attracted more media attention and public criticism than ever before.

And even as their popularity supposedly "plummets", Harry and Meghan's names still dominate headlines around the world.
