Prince Harry was positioned to work side-by-side with Prince William and was set to be the 'secret weapon' when his brother became king, according to sources.

Susan Junor, the author of Prince Harry: Brother, Soldier, Son told People the Duke of Sussex was going to "pick up the bits that William wouldn't be as good for" when William eventually became Head of State.

"They would be complementary and side-by-side throughout their lives," she explained.

There have been ongoing rumours of a rift between the brothers since 2018, with William revealing his sadness over the reported tension in the family recently.

A friend of the Duke of Cambridge told the  Sunday Times that he had said of Harry: "I've put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can't do that anymore; we're separate entities."

"I'm sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope that the time comes when we're all singing from the same page."

According to Junor, Harry was always compared to his older brother, which she says would've taken a toll on him.

"William was the good-looking one, the important one, the clever one," she said.

9Honey royal commentator Victoria Arbiter has said it's unlikely the public will know what really caused the rumoured feud between the brothers.

A lot of people have guessed the issue has something to do with Harry's relationship with Meghan.

"There's been a lot of speculation that some of it started because of Prince William," Arbiter tells 9Honey.

"Although he very much liked Meghan, and he loved seeing Harry happy with Meghan, he was concerned that perhaps things were moving at quite such a fast pace."

Any plans for the royal brothers to work together is looking unlikely, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announcing they will be 'stepping back' from their duties as senior royals.

Meghan and the couple's nine-month-old son Archie are currently in Canada, with Harry set to join them in the near future.

The Sussexes announced they will be splitting their time between the UK and North America, but will continue to support the Queen.
