Prince George and Princess Charlotte are expected to make their Christmas debut this year

One of the royal family's most well-known holiday traditions is their walk from Sandringham house to St Mary Magdalene church on Christmas Day.

This year, Prince George and Princess Charlotte are expected to make their debut, joining their parents on the famous walk for the first time.

The two eldest Cambridge children have not yet made a public appearance on Christmas Day due to their age -- George is six and Charlotte is just four.

However, The Sun reports Prince William and Kate Middleton have decided the pair are ready to take part in the tradition this year.

"It will be so sweet. George and Charlotte will make their Christmas debut, as long as they're both on good form on the day," a royal source told the publication.

"It's the picture all royal fans want to see. The royals walking to church on Christmas Day is a rite of passage and so William and Kate didn't want to expose their children too early, but they feel they're old enough now."

Their youngest sibling Prince Louis, 19 months, will skip the appearance and will instead be in the care of the Duchess' parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

Prince William first did the Christmas walk with his mother Princess Diana at Windsor Chapel in 1987, at age five.

Prince Harry joined the next year in Sandringham at age four.

The Queen hosts her family at Sandringham each Christmas, and the Christmas Day church service is a longtime tradition for the royals

This year the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and baby Archie will be skipping Christmas at Sandringham to spend the holidays with Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.
