Prince Charles and Camilla's touching gesture for fallen heroes on VE Day

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have paid tribute to those who died in World War II as they mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The couple lead the nation in observing a two-minute silence to mark the occasion, which commemorates the end of World War II in Europe in 1945.

Currently self-isolating at their home in Balmoral, Scotland, Charles and Camilla left their royal residence to visit a local war memorial nearby, where they laid a wreath and flowers in memory of all those who died in the conflict.

The royals shared a clip of the touching moment to social media, where fellow Brits and royal fans shared in commemorating the important anniversary.

"After leading the nation in a two-minute silence on #VEDay75, The Prince of Wales lays a wreath and The Duchess of Cornwall lays flowers in remembrance of those who died in the Second World War," the clip was captioned.

Charles also paid homage to his Scottish title and connections, donning a kilt for the appearance.

Meanwhile Camilla wore her 4 Rifles dress, a nod to her role as a Royal Colonel of the regiment, and a 12th Royal Lancers regimental brooch.

But the brooch was more than just a fitting accessory, it was also a tribute to her father, Major Bruce Shand, who served with the regiment.

She later acknowledged his service in a touching message she shared alongside the flowers she had laid at the memorial.

"In memory of my darling father and all the officers and men of the XII Lancers, who fought so bravely to give us peace," she wrote.

Charles and Camilla joined other royals celebrating VE Day in lockdown, with Prince William and Kate Middleton sharing a candid chat with veterans via video call to mark the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Queen gave a rare national address, where she remembered experiencing VE Day in 1945 and drew several links to the current coronavirus pandemic.
