All the ways Pippa Middleton's fairytale wedding wowed us four years ago

Pippa Middleton, sister to the Duchess of Cambridge, is celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with husband James Matthews.

The younger Middleton said "I do" in an elegant ceremony at St Mark's Church on May 20, 2017, not far from her and Kate's childhood home, Bucklebury Manor, at Berkshire.

Pippa looked radiant on her wedding day, stepping out of a vintage car as she arrived at the church in a delicate white lace gown.

A lot has changed since that day four years ago; Pippa and James now share a son and daughter together, and have enjoyed years of wedded bliss.

In honour of the anniversary, let's look back at their big day in 2017.

The couple

Pippa met James Matthews, a former professional racing driver, now hedge fund manager, for the first time in 2007.

But she wasn't linked to him romantically until 2012, when the couple reportedly started dating.

It's understood the couple split, as Pippa went on to date Nico Jackson, an affluent stockbroker, and that relationship lasted three years.

After their split in 2015, Pippa grew closer to James again and by 2016 it was confirmed that they were a couple.

They moved in together that May, according to reports, and James popped the question by the end of the year. Pippa said yes, and the couple set a wedding date for May 2017.

The ceremony

Pippa and James married at St Marks's Church in Englefield, close to the Middleton family's Berkshire home.

Though it wasn't a royal affair like Kate's 2011 wedding, where Pippa served as a bridesmaid, the ceremony was still lavish and looked like something out of a fairytale.

She arrived at the church  in a vintage Jaguar by her father Michael and walked down the aisle to James, the couple tying the knot in a sweet 45-minute ceremony.

Even though it wasn't an official royal occasion, fans still flocked to the church to wish the newlyweds well and catch a glimpse of the happy bride.

The dress

Pippa's dress was a fan favourite when photos of the intricate lace gown hit the internet.

Giles Deacon, who designed the dress with sweet cap sleeves, a high neck and keyhole back, said he was "thrilled" to work with Pippa.

"The bespoke silk cotton lace was hand appliqued to create an illusion of the dress having 'no seams'," he told outlets at the time.

"The lace bodice is embroidered with pearl detailing over an organza and tulle underskirt, which has payer upon layer to enable a floor sweeping movement.

"It's a privilege to show the craftsmanship that my team produces in London and a real testament to Pippa's support of British fashion."

Safe to say Pippa's dress was a total hit.

The guest list

Naturally, there were a fair few royals in attendance on Pippa's big day, including sister Kate Middleton and her husband Prince William.

Their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also invited (Prince Louis hadn't been born yet) and even served in the wedding party.

George was a page boy and Charlotte a flower girl on their aunt's big day, with mum Kate helping usher them into the ceremony in photos from outside the church.

The tiny royals stole the show on Pippa's big day, their adorable appearance sending royal fans in to a frenzy – but we're sure Pippa didn't mind.

Prince Harry also attended the wedding, arriving with brother Prince William on the day. He was dating Meghan Markle at the time, but she didn't attend.

The 'happily ever after'

After saying "I do", the couple headed to a reception at Englefield House in a vintage convertible, then off to their honeymoon in Australia.

But just one year later, they would be sharing more happy news with the world – they were going to be parents!

Pippa announced her first pregnancy in June 2018 and she and James welcomed son Arthur on October 15, 2018.

And just over two years later they welcomed another sweet addition to their family; baby Grace, born on March 15, 2021.
