Queen Elizabeth and Meghan navigate an awkward car moment during royal outing

All eyes were on Meghan Markle when she embarked on her first outing without Prince Harry by her side, with some anticipating a protocol breach or obvious slip-up.

However, the new Duchess of Sussex was perfectly at home with Queen Elizabeth II, with the pair even navigating a potentially awkward car moment with royal aplomb.

After arriving at Runcorn Station in Cheshire on Thursday, the royal duo were ushered to a car waiting to whisk them away to their first official duty.

"What is your preference?" cameras captured the 36-year-old asking her grandmother-in-law.

While plenty of media outlets were quick to label this moment of uncertainty as an etiquette bungle on Meghan's part, Her Majesty was visibly unbothered.

“You go first,” she told the newlywed Duchess, who responded, “Oh, okay" before climbing into the back seat.

It's likely Queen Elizabeth instructed her newest family member to enter the car ahead of her, so that she could exit the vehicle first when they arrived at their destination.

See? Crisis averted.

Footage of the event captured Meghan whispering, "Do it?" and Harry responding, "Now", seconds before they curtsied and bowed.
