Harry and Meghan's trouble with the 'Sussex Royal' Twitter handle

Kevin Keiley is a pretty normal guy if his Twitter account is anything to go by. He lives in Sussex, England, his profile picture is a cute dog and tweets about football.

In fact, the one thing that seems to set him apart is his handle: @SussexRoyal.

You read that right: this unassuming British bloke currently owns the Twitter handle Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are likely going to want very soon.

Just yesterday the Duke and Duchess of Sussex debuted their joint Instagram, splitting away from the joint Kensington Royal social media accounts they had shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The new account already has almost two million followers, with fans speculating it could mean Meghan and Harry are planning on being more active on social media.

But while most royal Instagram pages have Twitter accounts to match, the Sussexes have yet to create one, and Kevin Keiley might be the reason.

The royals like to keep their handles consistent across all social media, meaning Harry and Meghan would be looking to set up their Twitter account under the @SussexRoyal handle.

However, Keiley has laid claim to it for nine years.

The Sussex man isn't super active on the site, only tweeting every few months about TV shows and football games, but he's not likely to give up his handle of almost a decade at the drop of a hat.

Royal blogger and podcaster Laura Faurot speculated that this may mean the Sussexes will have to barter for the handle, though she thinks they may already have other plans to acquire it.

"They could pay for it also or Kevin could willingly relinquish it too," she told 9Honey.

"Intellectually, I have to think the British Royal Family have a plan for Twitter. Because if not, the announcement today just exponentially increased the value of Kevin’s Twitter handle, which seems like a puzzling thing to do if there is no plan in place."

It's not uncommon for the rich and famous to have to buy out their social media handles, especially when they're late to the game.

American banking company JPMorgan Chase allegedly offered one Twitter user $20,000 USD for the Twitter handle @Chase back in 2013.

Though technically against Twitter's regulations, the practice of buying out handles isn't illegal, meaning just about anyone can get away with it if they don't get Twitter involved.

But Faurot says it's unlikely the royal family would get involved with something so dodgy, adding: "To my knowledge the royal family hasn’t ever paid for a handle."

"Given the lack of transparency and consistency from Twitter they could just acquire the handle back and give it to the British Royal Family even though the account hasn’t violated any rules (i.e. he’s not pretending to be the royals)."

For now Keiley still has the handle, but only time will tell if he'll keep it.
