Meghan still isn't a British citizen

Despite applying for citizenship two years ago and marrying into the royal family, Meghan Markle still isn't officially a British citizen.

The duchess reportedly began the citizenship process in November 2017, shortly after she and Prince Harry announced their engagement to the world.

But don't think she got any special treatment because she was about to marry a Prince.

Kensington Palace confirmed at the time that Meghan would go through the same process as any immigrant to the UK and would be treated exactly the same as all other applicants.

Apparently, that includes wait times.

Despite having married Harry and now been a royal for well over a year, Meghan has reportedly still not been granted citizenship.

"Meghan is not yet a British citizen," a friend of the Duchess told MailOnline.

"It might seem extraordinary, given that she's been married to the Queen's grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it's a slow process."

Royal fans have speculated that Meghan would have applied for citizenship as a spouse of a British citizen, a process with some pretty strict deadlines.

Before she even came into the country, Meghan would have had to provide a range of evidence to prove the legitimacy of her relationship with Prince Harry.

On top of that, anyone who enters the UK as the fiancée of a Brit needs to marry within six months for their application to progress.

Fortunately, Meghan made the cut off, wedding Harry in a lavish royal ceremony in May last year.

But despite having already waited two years, Meghan shouldn't be getting her hopes up for a quick turnaround, Kensington Palace confirming that the process can take "several years."

Anyone who has applied for citizenship in a foreign country will know how arduous the process can be, but a different royal close to Meghan didn't have to wait at all, despite his American ancestry.

Archie, Harry and Meghan's son, automatically became a British citizen when he was born on English soil in May.

The little royal will be also be able to apply for dual citizenship though mum Meghan, who was born and raised in the US and is still an American citizen despite her British royal title.
