Meghan's subtle dig at royal restrictions in new interview

Meghan Markle seems to have made a subtle dig at the restrictions she had to abide by during her time as a senior working royal in her latest interview appearance.

The Duchess of Sussex made the comments in a video call with Emily Ramshaw, founder of The 19th News, a Texas-based non-profit news organisation.

In the interview, where she touched on issues of race and politics, Meghan said she's excited to speak out on those topics in a way she has "not been able to of late".

Discussing her and Prince Harry's relocation to the US following their royal split in March, the Duchess opened up about her desire to be more politically involved.

"To come back and to just see this state of affairs, I think at the onset, if I'm being honest, it was just devastating. It was so sad to see where our country was in that moment," she said.

"From my standpoint, it's not new to see this undercurrent of racism and certainly unconscious bias, but I think to see the changes that are being made right now is really — it's something I look forward to being a part of.

"And being part of using my voice in a way that I haven't been able to of late. So, yeah, it's good to be home."

Since she and Harry quit the monarchy, the pair have been increasingly vocal about issues of racism and colonialism, speaking out on several occasions over the past months.

This is a stark contrast from their time as royals, when the Duke and Duchess were bound by royal tradition to maintain a level of political neutrality.

Though the royals — including the Queen — have been known to speak on humanitarian and similar causes, they tend to keep quiet about political and other movements, such as Black Lives Matter.

Meghan and Harry, however, appear to be using their new freedom from these royal restrictions to speak up on the issues they care about.

As a senior working royal, Meghan was also prevented from speaking candidly about her political beliefs, despite holding strong views on US politics.

There have been reports that the Duchess is now considering a political career following her return to the US.

In the past, Meghan spoke openly about her distaste for current US President Donald Trump, and there were rumours that she refused to meet with him during her time as a royal.

With the US election approaching, and Trump campaigning for a second term, there is speculation that Meghan may use her new freedom to oppose his re-election.
