'I can't see the Palace losing': Media commentator weighs in on tensions between Meghan Markle and the royals

Meghan Markle will never win against the royals, according to media commentator Tom Tilley who says the monarchy is simply too powerful for an individual, even one as accomplished as Meghan, to take on.

"We know that when the institution of the royal family that goes up against an individual, the individual loses," he said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have recorded a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, which will air in Australia on Monday. Clips released so far show Meghan speaking out against her treatment during her time as part of the royal family.

Following news of the interview, claims about Meghan bullying staff while living in Kensington Palace in 2018 have resurfaced, leading to a war of words between the duchess and the Palace.

Tilley, host of The Briefing Podcast, told David Campbell and Belinda Russell on Today Extra that Meghan's interview with Oprah is a "complete mistake" and can only end badly for her.

"What's the point of doing this?" he continued.

Tilley said he could "empathise" with why the Sussexes want to speak out and acknowledged the couple "are hurting".

However, he maintained an interview wasn't the right course of action and was also poorly timed, airing as Prince Philip remains in hospital recovering from heart surgery.

"With Prince Philip in hospital, if something happens to him…," Tilley said.

Tilley believes the interview will only "inflame tensions" between the Sussexes and the royals.

"It won't solve anything. They're gonna lose," he said.

"I can't see the Palace losing. The Palace has been around for hundreds of years. It's a powerful institution with a lot of culture. It's not going to lose to an individual, it never has."

Tilley called the Palace's announcement of an investigation into Meghan's treatment of staff as a "hectic move", but maintained: "You can't win against them. They are gonna be stronger."

Sources close to the duchess have said Meghan "knew it would get ugly" ahead of the Oprah interview airing.

Writing in Harper's Bazaar, royal biographer Omid Scobie reported the source as saying: "Harry and Meghan knew that it would get ugly in the run up [to the Oprah special], but seeing such an obvious attempt at destroying her character was distressing and upsetting."

"You can't ignore the timing of this. This has been done to undermine her character or undermine the topics that they discuss."

Scobie quoted an additional source as saying: "They have had everything and the kitchen sink thrown at them this week, but ultimately nothing will stop them from sharing their truth."
