Kate is 'just like a normal mum' says Mary Berry

She is a royal and future queen consort of England, but Kate Middleton is also "just like a normal mum" according to celebrity chef Mary Berry.

Kate and Prince William appeared in a Christmas special alongside Berry – A Berry Royal Christmas – where they teamed up to cook a festive dinner for staff and volunteers from the charities the Cambridges' support.

Now Berry has revealed that not only are the royal couple "really lovely" and totally in love with one another eight years into their marriage, they're also brilliant parents.

"[Kate] she makes her own children's birthday cakes, just like a normal mum," Berry said during an appearance on Lorraine, adding that the royal is "good at piping".

"They are just like you and me a really lovely couple, they love each other and they want to do what they can for their country."

During the special Kate revealed that William had tried to win her over with his cooking skills when they were both studying at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where they first started dating.

"In university days he used to cook all sorts of meals," Kate told Berry in the special.

"I think that's when he was trying to impress me, Mary! Things like Bolognese sauce, and things like that."

William admitted that he's not much of a cook these days, but Kate said her husband's still very good at whipping up breakfast.

Not that they need to be Michelin-star chefs – the royals have access to a whole staff of chefs and cooks to prepare their meals.

Though Kate may not spend every evening in the kitchen like "normal mums", she's always been a very hands-on parent.

Like Princess Diana before her, Kate has brought her children along on multiple royal tours, preferring to keep them close while travelling for royal duties.

Diana famously brought baby William to Australia with her and Prince Charles when they toured the land down under in 1983 and was one of the first royal mums to bring her children on tour.

The Queen herself left her four children at home when she travelled, though she took no pleasure in being away from Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward when they were young.
