Prince William's first public engagement after Princess of Wales' diagnosis

Prince William's next move has been revealed by Kensington Palace almost a month after the Princess of Wales told the world she had been diagnosed with cancer.

The Prince of Wales, 41, stepped back from public duties in March to be with his wife and their three children – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five – as Catherine, 42, underwent treatment.

While Catherine isn't expected to return to work until she's been cleared by her medical team, Kensington Palace revealed overnight that William will step out later this week for his first official duty since Catherine's diagnosis was made public.

On Thursday, April 18 (Friday in Australia), William will visit Surrey and West London to highlight the work of local community and environmental organisations in the area.

His day will begin at Surplus to Supper in Sunbury-on-Thames, where William will see how the food distribution charity sorts, repackages and delivers unused food to community groups.

He will then visit a youth centre in West London, which receives regular deliveries from Surplus to Supper and distributes the food to those in need.

William's day is one that's in line with his desire for a waste-free world, a key theme of his Earthshot Prize.

Reducing food wastage and using surplus is also something King Charles III has been spotlighting in the wake of his coronation in May.

This engagement will be William's first since Catherine announced in a video message on March 22 (March 23 in Australia) that announced in a video message.

Shortly after the message was released by Kensington Palace, William and Catherine flew by helicopter to Anmer Hall, their country estate in Norfolk.

It was there they spent the Easter school holidays with their children, which meant they missed the Easter Sunday service at Windsor Castle, which the British royal family traditionally attends together each year.

Catherine's last official public appearance was on Christmas Day, at the traditional mass in Sandringham.
