Close friend of Princess Diana says she 'wouldn't be upset' about Harry stepping back

With the royal family facing such tumultuous times, it's easy to wonder what Princess Diana would have thought about the way her sons, Prince Harry and Prince William have navigated their royal lives and duties.

It seems we don't have to wonder any longer; according to a close friend and colleague of the late 'People's Princess', she "wouldn't be upset" about Prince Harry's decision to step back as a senior royal.

"She would say, "do what you need to do", definitely," Paul Costelloe, a fashion designer from Dublin who worked for Diana for 15 years, told Evoke.

"She was not a royalist at all, she was a person of the people and she put her children first before anything else."

Harry and wife Meghan are preparing to swap official royal engagements for a more independent family life with their young son, Archie, from March 31.

Costelloe first met Diana in 1982, and worked with her until her death in 1997.

"She was lovely to dress and she was a very honest, sincere person. She was family orientated and she had a sense of humour — she liked to smile," he said of the beloved royal.

Among the outfits he designed for Diana is a skirt she wore in 1993 while in India, and an iconic pink suit worn as part of her official tour in Canada.

Costelloe added during the interview that William was most well-behaved out of Diana's two sons, while Harry was "the little troublemaker," which doesn't really surprise us at all.

While we can never truly know how Princess Diana would have dealt with the way that her son and his wife have been treated by the media and royal commentators, we tend to agree with Costelloe — she surely would only have ever wanted what was best for her boys.
