A new book has given us an insight into what it reportedly was like moments after Prince Harry revealed to his family his intention to marry Meghan Markle back in 2016.

According to an extract from royal correspondent Robert Jobson's new book, Our King, the then-Prince Charles' reaction to his son's happy news left much to be desired, with Harry ending up "infuriated" by his father's response.

Per the New York Post, the first reaction after Harry announced his intention to marry the former Hollywood actress was from his older brother, Prince William, who asked him: "Are you sure, Harold?"

Charles quickly jumped in, reportedly far from congratulations, telling his younger son that he would not be putting Markle on the royal payroll, since he was already paying for his wife Camilla as well as William's growing family.

Jobson stated that this "infuriated Harry," with the now-King's "bombshell" leading to the beginning of the falling out between father and son.

The late Queen was also reportedly surprised by Charles' decision, and after asking him why he hadn't given in, he simply "told her that he wasn't a bank."

Jobson theorises that this incident tainted the following interactions the Sussexes had with the royal family, leading Markle to believe Kate Middleton was "stand-offish" with her from the get-go, as well as contributing to the spat the sisters-in-law had just before the 2018 wedding where Meghan claimed Kate had "baby brain".

He also claims that the late Queen had quite enough of her grandson and his wife's antics, especially after their 2021 bombshell interview with Oprah.

The late Queen reportedly thought the couple's behaviour was "quite mad", adding that her grandson was "so consumed" by his love for his new wife that it was "clouding his judgment."
