Prince Joachim of Denmark rushed to hospital for emergency surgery

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark's brother, Prince Joachim, was rushed to hospital in France on Saturday night for emergency surgery.

The royal underwent immediate surgery for a blood clot in his brain, which is a serious medical emergency and can cause a stroke.

The surgery was successful, and the prince is now in a stable condition with his wife, Princess Marie, at his side, according to a statement from the Danish royal family.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark asked for the support of the Danish public in the statement.

Prince Joachim has been holidaying at Château de Cayx in France with his children, wife and ex-wife, Countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg.

The Countess was there to celebrate her and Joachim's second son's birthday, Prince Felix turning 18 on 22 July.

The whole family came together to mark the occasion, posing happily in a series of photos shared to the Danish royal family's Instagram page.

Felix also appeared in a series of solo portraits and a photo with his older model brother, Prince Nikolai, 20.

Felix and Nikolai are Joachim's eldest children, both born during his marriage to Countess Alexandra.

He also has two younger children with his current wife, Princess Marie; Prince Henrik, named for Joachim's late father, and Princess Athena.

The couple wed in 2008, following Joachim and Alexandra's 2005 divorce, and welcomed their children in 2009 and 2012 respectively.
