Camilla reflects on decades of public scrutiny in candid Vogue interview: 'I rise above it'

Camilla, The Duchess Of Cornwall, has gotten candid about her relationship with Prince Charles – and the British public –  in an in-depth interview with Vogue.

"I was scrutinised for such a long time that you just have to find a way to live with it," she revealed to the publication, adding that she has to learn how to "rise above".

Camilla also remarked on the importance of finding time each day to spend with her husband, despite them being "like ships passing in the night".

"We always sit down together and have a cup of tea and discuss the day. We have a moment," she said.

The duchess told Vogue the early years of their relationship were especially difficult, due to the negative reaction of the public.

"Nobody likes to be looked at all the time and, you know, criticised," she shared. "But I think in the end, I sort of rise above it and get on with it. You've got to get on with life."

Over the last few decades, the public has warmed to Camilla, and her popularity has risen. Earlier this year the Queen confirmed she wants Camilla to become Queen Consort when Charles becomes King.

The duchess gave the Vogue photographer a bit of a behind-the-scenes look of her life at Clarence House, which revealed just how important family is to her. Photos of her loved ones decorate her desk: Princes Harry and William in their 20s, the Prince of Wales in his scarlet dress uniform, and a gleaming photo of Meghan and Harry on their wedding day.

Family comes first for Camilla, which is why she and Charles always make sure to spend time together, no matter how busy their schedules may be.

"It's lovely to catch up when we have a bit of time," she added. "You know when we go away, the nicest thing is that we actually sit and read our books in different corners of the same room. It's very relaxing because you know you don't have to make conversation. You just sit and be together."

Another tradition Camilla keeps with her family is doing the daily Wordle together – an online brain teaser game.

"I do Wordle every day with my granddaughter. She'll text me to say, 'I've done it in three', and I say, 'Sorry, I've done it in two today.' It's very satisfactory when it tells you how brilliant you are," she chuckles.

In addition to her royal step-grandchildren, Camilla also has five grandchildren from her son and daughter, Tom and Laura, who she had with her ex-husband.

Earlier this week, Prince Charles and Camilla led the royals in the carriage procession at Royal Ascot this year.

Camilla was officially made a member of the royal family and honoured with the title of Duchess of Cornwall in 2005, when she married Prince Charles.
