Entire wing of Buckingham Palace emptied

Buckingham Palace is a Royal home and also a Royal office.

But now, there's a lot of other work going on there for one very big move - emptying out thousands of pieces of artwork and furniture from across six floors of an entire wing of The Queen's main home.

"Moving historic works of art within a historic interior is always a very complex business," Caroline De Guitaut says in a video posted on The Royal Family's Twitter account.

"But this is really on a very grand scale. We're talking about objects from paintings to porcelain to furniture .. decorative objects, books textiles etc."

From the Royal Collection, there'll be 3,000 items taken out of the East Wing, which is the part of the Palace the public can visit. These will include items ranging from works of fine art to everyday furniture.

While 150 of the items will be displayed at their original home the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, where Harry and Meghan went just the other day.

It's expected that the process of moving out all the items will take six months to complete.

"Decanting an entire wing of an historic building on the scale of Buckingham Palace is a huge undertaking and requires meticulous planning," Director of the Royal Collection, Tim Knox, said in a statement.

The renovation work will have to do with things like stripping out old wiring and pipes that are now a fire risk, some of which haven't been updated since the 1950s.

And things like lifts will be updated too.

It's all part of of a huge 10-year restoration project that will cost nearly AU$700 million.

Even the Queen will have to move out of her rooms when they're renovated in 2025. She'll be 99.

Her majesty is said to be quote immensely pragmatic about it all.

The Master of The Queen’s Household, Tony Johnstone-Burt, also commented on the cost of the works, saying: "We take the responsibility that comes with using these public funds very seriously, and have carefully prioritised works undertaken in the initial years to address the areas at greatest risk of fire and flood."

The East Wing in Figures

According to the Royal Family website, The East Wing is made up of over 200 rooms.

The 3,000 strong Royal Collection housed in that section of Buckingham Palace includes:

• 200 paintings
• 40 chandeliers
• 1,100 items of ceramics and glass
• 100 mirrors
• 30 clocks
• 200 books
• 300 items of fine furniture
• 560 items of everyday furniture (e.g. beds, desks and chairs)
• 40 historic textiles
