Richard Wilkins' hilarious birthday serenade for Rebecca Maddern

Richard Wilkins sent Rebecca Maddern a hilarious video message for her birthday, serenading his Today co-host with the help of his son.

Maddern revealed the brilliant clip on the show this morning, confessing that it even made her cry.

Explaining that COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne meant she couldn't see anyone for her birthday, Maddern goes on to reveal that her husband organised a special gift for the occasion.

He had put together a touching video of clips from her friends and family wishing Maddern a happy birthday.

"It was so beautiful, I had beautiful messages from my loved ones," she says.

"And they were all singing happy birthday — all out of tune, obviously."

Then she drops a hilarious bombshell: "I just have to say how nice it is to have someone in my life now who can actually hold a note."

Today then cut to a clip of none other than Wilkins playing piano in his home with his son, the pair breaking into a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for Maddern.

Harmonising on the slowed down version of the tune, Wilkins and his son Christian actually did a pretty good job.

That is, until they get to the end and added a few interesting notes of their own (watch the video above).

Wilkins and Maddern, along with fellow host Jayne Azzopardi, break into giggles as the clip ends and cuts back to the studio, where Maddern looks thrilled.

"Who gets a harmonised birthday message?" she gushes to Wilkins. "Oh, you are too good."

"It made me absolutely cry my eyes out," she admits, Wilkins then responds: "Well, we love you!"
