Mum's 'creepy' house key discovery sparks fears she's got 'bodies under her home'

A homeowner is feeling unsettled after discovering what she thought was her humble house key may actually be hiding a chilling secret.

The unnamed woman, who is from Montana in the United States, shared an image of her key to Reddit, where she revealed its disturbing ability.

The resident has been living in her house for seven years, but it was built in 1937.

She says the pictured house key can still unlock every room in the house, however, "the bedrooms only lock [and] unlock from the outside."

Reddit users alongside the homeowner were struggling to think of an innocuous reason as to why anyone would want their bedrooms to only be able to lock or unlock from the outside — which, at best, is purely impractical, but also has the potential for danger should the house catch fire — and, naturally, commenters' imaginations ran very wild.

One Reddit user suspected that the previous owners could have been hiding a sinister secret.

"Dude, you've got bodies under your house," they wrote.

The homeowner did not disagree with this assessment, saying it "would not surprise me" when she considers some of the other "creepy things" they have found around and about their home.

"My son dug a big hole in the yard and found a bunch of weird bottles this summer. I did some research on the labels," she elaborated.

"One of them was some sort of creosote that was used in the early 1900s as a cure for whooping cough."

The homeowner says she is keen to move out but is unable to do so, and also revealed she found recently "a very sharp samurai knife in a high up cupboard" that they don't use, claiming the knife doesn't belong to anyone in the house.

Some commenters tried to assuage the homeowner, suggesting the key could be a form of "old time parental control" if the house hosted travellers passing through town.

One person, however, said it would be an unusual security measure by 1937.
