Queen becomes first British monarch to reach Sapphire Jubilee
The Queen has become the first British Monarch to reach the Sapphire Jubilee, marking 65 years since she acceded the throne.
Buckingham Palace today re-issued a David Bailey portrait of Her Majesty to commemorate the milestone. In the photo, the Queen wears sapphire jewellery given to her by King George VI as a wedding gift in 1947.
The portrait was among a series taken by Bailey at Buckingham Palace in 2014. Speaking then, he said: "I've always been a huge fan of the Queen. She has very kind eyes with a mischievous glint. I've always liked strong women, and she is a very strong woman."
Bailey also photographed Princess Diana and the Beatles.
The Queen already became the United Kingdom's longest reigning monarch, when she turned 89 in 2015.
It is understood Her Majesty, who is now 90, would commemorate the day quietly at her home in Sandringham.
