Prom proposal goes wrong in the most hilarious way possible

Count yourself lucky proms aren't popular in Australia and we never had to go through the nerve-wracking process of approaching a ‘date’.

A US teen made a right fool of himself when he tried to do just that last month and mucked it up in the absolute worst way possible.

Austin Mousa, 17, had arrived at a classmate's house with a huge box of donuts to ask her to prom, with his friend videoing what was meant to be a sweet moment.

The only problem? Austin had rolled up to the wrong house.

Unfortunately, the Nevada teen didn't realise his mistake until it was too late, aa a young woman opened the door and cried "Oh my gosh!" when she spotted him.

There's a split second of awkward horror as Austin realises the girl in front of him isn't the girl he intended to ask to prom, while his buddy laughs in the background.

"Did we pull up to the wrong house?" the teen demands of his friend, Johnny Pashales, who continued to laugh.

The poor girl whose house they had arrived at was confused at first but accepted Austin's horrified apologies.

"It's okay, I thought you were someone else," she told him in the video.

Luckily the only thing wounded was Austin's ego, but he found enough humour in the situation to share the video of his embarrassing flub on Twitter.

"Only I could mess up going to a girl's house to ask her to prom," Austin captioned the video, as well as tagging the girl, Hannah, who he actually meant to ask.

The video went viral almost immediately, with plenty of people reliving their own awkward prom experiences in the comments.

"That girl was literally me in high school," one girl tweeted.

"She wanted that date so bad."

Another Twitter user added: "[He] should've just asked her, he went through the trouble to get donuts and bother her."

"She looked like she wanted a date."

Austin later added an update revealing that he did manage to take Hannah to prom, sharing a sweet photo of the two of them all dressed up with the caption, "Update: I found Hannah's house."

After he successfully asked Hannah out, the pair returned to the girl's house and offered her one of the donuts Austin brought.

Here's hoping the next young man who knocked on her door was actually there to ask her out.
