Princess Diana shows off piano skills in Australian tour video unearthed 34 years on

Princess Diana was known to be quite the 'twinkle toes', but she could also tickle the ivories, as an unearthed video reveals.

Footage of beloved late royal playing the piano during a royal tour of Australia with Prince Charles has re-emerged 34 years later, much to the delight of fans.

The video above, sourced from the Nine News archives, captures the Prince and Princess of Wales during a visit to the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne on January 28, 1988.

The royal couple, visiting Australia as part of the bicentennial celebrations, are seen in a room filled with music students and staff along with members of the media.

After some gentle encouragement from the University of Melbourne's music professor, Diana, then 26, takes her seat at the piano for an impromptu performance.

Rather than busting out 'Chopsticks', the princess, dressed in a blue and white striped suit, opts for something a little more high-brow: Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2.

9Honey's royal commentator Victoria Arbiter was among those who shared the video on its anniversary last week, tweeting, "This has long been one of my favorite clips of Diana."

Only weeks ago, another royal made headlines by flexing her piano skills: the Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate, 40, surprised audiences during a Christmas carols event in December 2021, accompanying singer Tom Walker on the piano for his performance of 'For Those Who Can't Be Here.'

Like with Diana's impromptu performance three decades earlier, fans were delighted.

Diana and Charles' January 1988 royal visit to Australia came five years after their first tour Down Under, when they brought baby Prince William with them.

Two other royal couples visited Australia during the bicentennial year — the Queen and Prince Philip, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

Playing the piano wasn't Princess Diana's only artistic skill.

The royal was also a talented dancer, with a particular love for ballet, and even worked as a dance instructor prior to meeting Prince Charles.

While her dream of being a ballerina may not have come to fruition, she was an avid supporter of the English National Ballet and made regular visits during her time as a royal.

She even performed on stage with dancer Wayne Sleep during a 1985 event at the Royal Opera House, as a birthday surprise for her husband.

Diana also famously took a spin on the dance floor with Saturday Night Fever star John Travolta at a White House gala hosted by then-US President Ronald Reagan.
