Why Prince Harry chose not to get a prenup with Meghan Markle

Prince Harry has reportedly refused a prenup in the lead-up to his May wedding to Meghan Markle.

And the reason, according to the Daily Mail, is simple: He doesn't think he needs one.

"There was never any question in Harry’s mind that he would sign a prenup," a supposed 'friend' of Prince Harry's told columnist Richard Eden.

"He’s determined that his marriage will be a lasting one, so there’s no need for him to sign anything."

Seems fair.

It's also in keeping with older brother Prince William, who reportedly chose to forgo a prenup for similar reasons when he married Kate Middleton in 2011.

Kensington Palace refused to comment on the "private matter", the Mail reported.

But the 'no prenup' situation is an update on last week's rumours, when blue-blood society journalist Sophia Money-Coutts (read: someone who would know) wrote in The TelegraphThe Telegraph that she'd "heard whispers" there was going to be a prenup. (Still following?)

Her take was that this was sound logic. Prince Harry is estimated to be worth around £30 million (AUD$56 million), and Markle about £4 million (AUD$7.2 million) – both certainly have assets worth thinking about carefully.

"It’s the one area in which I reckon we could be more like the Yanks," Money-Coutts wrote. "Full and frank conversations about prenups all round."

Markle might know something about them, having been through a divorce before; she split from her first husband, movie producer Tevor Engelson, in 2013.

For whatever it's worth, however, prenups aren't currently enforceable by law in Britain (though courts increasingly try to take them into account). So this might also factor in to whether a couple would go through the process of arranging such an agreement. Especially a couple already under so much pressure to live out the perfect marriage.
