One detail at the Olympics closing ceremony left fans confused and frustrated

Fans and athletes alike were left baffled and more than a little disappointed by one detail at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 closing ceremony yesterday.

Taking to TikTok after the event on Sunday evening (Paris time), many people who attended voiced their frustration at the fact that singer Billie Eilish didn't perform inside Stade de France.

In fact, none of the big-name American artists who performed as part of the official handover to Los Angeles for the Olympics in 2028 were on the ground in Paris, leaving some fans to say they felt "ripped off".

Instead, Eilish and other musicians from the US, including Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers took to a stage on Venice Beach for pre-recorded performances that were aired as part of the ceremony.

They put on a show in front of a huge 'LA 2028' sign, but the audience in France weren't impressed.

Rather than being treated to an all-out performance live in the landmark Stade de France, fans and athletes in the audience had to watch the LA part of the closing ceremony on a screen high up in the stadium's rafters.

Australian Olympian Liz Clay was among the athletes who had mistakenly thought Eilish and co. would be performing in Paris, sharing a disappointed TikTok from the night.

"POV: you thought Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg were performing at the closing ceremony..." she wrote over footage of her looking put out.

"And they performed in LA... on the screen."

One TikTok user likened watching the pre-recorded footage on a big screen to a Zoom video conference.

"I still loved it though️," user @ayloparis wrote over footage from the night, "but so many people were leaving [including] the athletes during the LA part, it was awkward."

In another video posted by athletes from Team Ireland, boxer Michaela Walsh told fans "I'm crying because Billie's not here!" from the floor of the stadium.

"We now have trust issues," joked teammate Jennifer Lehane in the video's caption.

But Eilish and the other US stars were never actually supposed to perform live in Paris.

It was confirmed ahead of the closing ceremony that a number of "world-famous singers" would welcome the Olympics to LA with a mix of pre-taped and live performances from the US.

Fans had hoped that Eilish, who was long rumoured to be among the list of performers, would make an appearance in Paris because she had posted from the French capital recently.

Some also expected Snoop Dogg to perform in Paris because he had been a staple at the Olympics for two weeks, earning a reported US$500,000 (about $780,000 AUD) a day to promote the games.

However, other social media users said the annoyed fans should have paid more attention to what had actually been confirmed for the closing ceremony.

"They never said they would be here," one wrote in the comment section of a TikTok bemoaning the fact that Eilish wasn't in Paris.
