Love stories: 'Funny' moment Olympic snowboarder Shaun White realised he'd met his match in Nina Dobrev

The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White recently thrilled fans with news of their engagement after more than four years together.

The Bulgarian-born Canadian actress, 35, excitedly announced her engagement by sharing pictures of the lavish proposal and writing: "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé."

The joyous news comes years after Dobrev's high-profile romance with fellow The Vampire Diaries co-star, Ian Somerhalder.

She's finally found happiness with American sports star White, 38, and the pair have cemented their bond by getting through some life challenges and changes together.

In 2022, Dobrev was right by his side as he announced his retirement from professional snowboarding, calling him the "GOAT".

White also helped take care of the actress as she recovers from a bike accident that left her needing knee surgery.

But for the newly-engaged pair, who met in 2019, things got off to a bit of a humorous start.

"I actually didn't know anything about her," White told People after they met at a Florida event.

He said they bumped into some fans who wanted a photo with Dobrev, rather than him, and it left him taken aback in a good way.

"Can we get a photo... with her?" a waitress at a restaurant said as they grabbed a bite to eat after the event.

"And I was like, 'What's happening? What's going on?' It was actually really funny."

The pair soon started dating and in early 2020 made things Instagram-official with their millions of followers.

It appears that over the years, the pair have bonded over their love of travel and snowboarding.

In 2022, White announced his retirement from professional snowboarding and Dobrev paid tribute to him in a post that got more than one million likes.

"I am in awe of you. Today we are celebrating you. Your hard work. Your passion. Your determination. Your talent. Your class. Your fearlessness. Your courage. Your soul. Your heart. YOUR LEGACY," she wrote in her post.

"I couldn't be more proud. Of everything you have accomplished over the last 20+ years as a competitor and the man you have become. You are one of a kind. You are a true hero and you inspire me daily."

Dobrev went on to call White "the G.O.A.T. of snowboarding" and added: "Not to mention you are also the G.(B).O.A.T. = Greatest Boyfriend Of All Time."

She also reportedly threw him a retirement party to celebrate his achievements and next chapter.

In January, he shared a sweet birthday tribute to Nina and wrote: "Life with you has been my greatest adventure!! Happy birthday my love!!"

According to Vogue, White popped the question at a fancy restaurant in New York and proposed with a five-carat Lorraine Schwartz ring.

He previously told US Weekly about their relationship saying they clicked really well.

"I wish I could sum it up into one or two things," he told the publication.

"It's such a mix of everything. Like our dogs get along, you know?"

He went on to gush about his partner, saying she has "this overwhelming kindness and care for people".

"She wants to elevate the people around her. It's such a beautiful thing, especially in today's world… To have that kind of a caring quality still is really special."
