A couple have gone viral on TikTok for sharing their household money-saving hacks — some of which have been described as extreme.

Amber Horne, a mother of five from Oregon in the United States, has been married to her husband John for 25 years, and throughout their marriage, he has taken some interesting cost-cutting measures.

Some videos show John confessing he removes the lightbulb out of their fridge, or walking on the outside of their carpets only so they don't wear down as quickly.

Not all of the hacks seem to be welcomed by his wife, however, with one Mother's Day tip being the opposite of endorsed by Amber.

John even has a hack for toilet paper, which may come in handy lest another shortage happens.

According to John, the debate of how to put your toilet roll face-up or face-down has been settled.

"Toilet paper companies want us to put the roll over the top, so when you pull on it, all [this toilet paper] is wasted," he says.

Apparently, by "having [toilet paper] come out the bottom, it rips so much easier and there isn't a bunch of waste."

John claims research shows 30 per cent of money spent on toilet paper can be saved by this hack.
